I think beyond all the obvious musical reasons that the JGB was such a treat for all those years, the other thing that set the shows apart was the crowd. Always a small, intimate gig. (Until later years) ALWAYS full knowlegable heads in attendance who knew what they where there for, to see Garcia put out music HE loved and couldn't express any other way with the Dead. Joy on the stage, Joy in the crowd. He could have played nursery rhymes all night and we would have been floored!

By the way, once he started playing the larger venues that was mostly lost. After seeing JGB and the Dead for years, I slowed down for some child bearing. I went to a JGB show at Madison Square Garden and all that was lost.
